(This is a side story from Kirsten's perspective, taking place before Part 3.)
---
I stood atop the front steps of Kayla's house, my car parked nearby. I
took out my phone, opened the camera app, and switched it to selfie
mode. Will Martin's face looked back at me from the screen. Unsightly,
but probably the best I could've done for tonight. I snapped a picture
and sent it to Kayla, accompanied by the message "Guess who?"
Soon after, the front door opened to reveal Kayla. "Eww. Who are you wearing?" she said, twisting her face into an exaggerated expression of disgust.
I giggled, pretty sure that was a joke. "Sorry about the body," I said. "I needed to swap with someone who didn't have anything better to do tonight than be a decoy."
"Don't worry about it," Kayla said, stepping back to let me inside. "It's not like any randos are going to see us with Will Martin."
---
"So did you tell little Will a story, or was he a big enough boy for the truth?" Kayla asked me as I hung up Will's jacket in the entrance hall.
"I told him I was going to a party at Robert Fraser's house," I said, "and that I didn't want the basketball team to hit on me."
"And he bought it?" Kayla said, laughing a little. "I mean, as if an invitation from Robert Fraser would mean anything to us."
"I guess when you're a dork, everyone cooler than you seems equally cool," I said.
"I guess," Kayla said. She motioned toward the living room. "C'mon. The others are waiting."
Kayla wanted this get-together to be a small, elite one, so by "the others", she just meant Madison and her boyfriend Andrew. I wasn't very close with Madison, and even less so with Andrew - but they were cool with Kayla, so they were cool with me. (Not like I had much of a choice, though, if I wanted to be cool with Kayla.)
When Kayla and I entered the living room, Madison and Andrew both lifted their eyes from their phones. "I didn't know you were coming," Andrew said, looking at me.
"That's Kirsten," Kayla said. "Don't mind her body."
"I won't ask," Andrew said.
"It's better not to," Madison said.
"So, what are we gonna do tonight?" I asked Kayla as she and I sat down. "Your parents are both away, right?"
"Yeah, on a business trip," Kayla said. "They won't be back until Sunday. So we've got the house all to ourselves." She paused. "Well, except for my kid brother Evan, but he'll be too busy playing video games to bother us."
"Ooh! Can we sleep over?" Madison asked.
"But we didn't bring any sleeping bags," said Andrew.
"You really don't think I have enough beds for all of you?" Kayla said, spreading her arms to convey the size of her house.
"Fair enough," Andrew said.
"But yeah, having you all over for the night sounds fun," Kayla said. "And for until we go to bed, I was thinking... In honor of Kirsten's unfortunate situation, why don't we make all of our party games bodyswap-themed?"
"You mean like bodyswap Spin the Bottle?" I said.
"Yeah, or bodyswap Seven Minutes in Heaven," Kayla said. "I guess we can't get much out of that one with only one couple and two singles, though."
"I'm up for bodyswap games," I said. I mean, I'd rather spend the evening in any of the others' bodies than in this one. "'Fraid I can't stay the night, though. I shouldn't give Will too much time to fuck something up in my body."
"Aw, alright," Kayla said. She looked over at Madison and Andrew, who signaled their consent too. "Spin the Bottle gets old fast with only four people, though," Kayla said, standing up. "I'll go get Evan. It's more of a thrill with a dud body, anyway."
"Isn't Will's body already the dud?" I said. I'd rather not have a chance to sink lower than this.
Kayla examined me for a couple of seconds, her hand on her chin. "We can go duddier," she said.
---
A few minutes later, the four of us were gathered in Kayla's well-furnished basement, along with Evan - 13 years old, blond, bespectacled, kind of chubby, and judging by his body language, just happy the big kids were letting him join in. We sat in a circle on the carpeted floor, with Evan on my left, then Kayla, Andrew, and Madison on my right. In the center of the circle was a small glass bottle.
"Welcome to bodyswap Spin the Bottle!" Kayla announced. "For those of you who don't know the rules," she said, glancing at Evan, "we take turns clockwise around the circle. When it's your turn, you spin the bottle. Whoever the bottle's top points to, they get to decide whether to kiss you... or swap bodies with you." She gestured to the body-swapping machine in the basement with us. It was a newer model than mine - smaller and sleeker, with helmets that didn't even need to touch your head, like those dome-shaped hair dryers at salons. "Don't worry," Kayla said. "If you lose your own body, you'll get it back after the game is over - sooner or later. Now, Kirsten, as guest of honor, why don't you go first?"
"Sure," I said. I put my hands on the bottle, trying to calculate my spin so it would land on Madison. I knew Kayla was too vain to take Will's body off my hands if I landed on her, but maybe Madison wasn't. I pushed the bottle into a spin, and when it came to a stop... it was clearly pointing more toward Andrew than Madison.
"What'll it be, Andrew?" Kayla asked.
"Hmm... I'll swap bodies with her," Andrew said.
Andrew and I got up and sat down in the seats attached to the swapping machine. Kayla followed, lowering the helmets over our heads and pressing a button on the machine. A few seconds of smooth mechanical humming later, I found myself in Andrew's body.
Maybe not ideal, but a lot better than before, I thought to myself, examining Andrew's well-proportioned form as I returned to the circle. As I sat back down between Evan and Madison, my eyes rested for a moment on Andrew's crotch. I wonder what Madison's getting...
"Evan, you're up," Kayla said. Evan eyed the bottle for a moment, then awkwardly put his hands on it and gave it a spin - which landed on Madison.
Madison looked uncomfortable. "Kiss," she said, sighing, after a couple of seconds. She crawled into the center of the circle, leaned over, and gave Evan a quick peck on the lips. Evan visibly blushed.
Next up was Kayla. She gave the bottle a firm, confident spin, which finally came to rest... on me.
"Swap bodies," I said deviously.
"You backstabbing bitch," Kayla said, seemingly in jest. With slight reluctance, she led me over to the machine and swapped us. I felt a rush of satisfaction as I looked down at Kayla's slender, feminine figure, framed by her fiery chest-length locks.
Andrew's spin ended up pointing back at him, so he spun again. His second spin landed, to his clear disappointment, on Evan. "Ooh, let's swap bodies," Evan said. The aftermath of that swap was the first time I had seen someone genuinely happy to have a body like Will's.
"Hope you don't feel as bad about having kissed these lips anymore," Andrew said to Madison. She smiled at him, though maybe not as much as she would have if he was in his own body. It's harder to be sweet when you look like Evan.
Madison's spin landed just about halfway between Kayla and Andrew. "What does that look like?" Madison asked. "Kayla, or Andrew?"
Andrew squinted. "I think it's pointing a little more toward me," he said.
"That's what I think, too," said Evan, craning his neck to look at the bottle from different angles.
"Nope," Kayla said. "Definitely pointing more at me."
"You know what?" Madison said. "I agree with Kayla."
"Maybe we should just spin it again," Evan said. Kayla gave him a look. "On second thought," he said, "maybe it is pointing at Kayla."
"Told you," Kayla said to Andrew. "Swap bodies?" she asked Madison rhetorically.
"Swap bodies," Madison confirmed, giving Kayla finger guns.
Both parties were smiling on their way back from the swapping machine. Kayla gave Madison's hair a confident flip. Madison was clearly jazzed about this unusual form of intimacy with her boyfriend's body.
"Now what?" Evan asked. "Do we go around again?"
Kayla thought for a moment. "I have a better idea. Evan, could you swap back with Andrew and go upstairs?"
"Aw, already?" Evan said. "What for?"
"Sorry," Kayla said. "This next part's for the big kids only."
Evan got up. "I can't wait until Mom and Dad buy me a body like this," he said, looking down at Will's hands. Kayla and I silently exchanged an amused look. Evan's expectations were low.
After Evan was gone and Andrew was back in Will's body, Kayla got up and made her way to an out-of-the-way corner of the room. She opened a cabinet and pulled from it two full six-packs of beer bottles.
"Nice," Andrew said as Kayla carried the beer back over. "Mind passing me one?"
"Actually," Kayla said, "I was thinking we could use these to spice up our game. New rules: when the bottle points at you, you can choose to kiss, swap bodies, or make the person in your original body take a drink."
"A bodyswap Spin the Bottle drinking game?" I said. "Let's do it. Will's about to get wasted back in my body."
Kayla rolled her eyes. "You know what I meant," she said.
"I know," I said. "If I don't kiss or swap, it's Will's body that drinks."
---
Sitting once again on Andrew's nice ass, I watched as Madison - now back in her own body - gave the bottle a spin so slow it clearly wasn't even supposed to look fair. It landed on Andrew, now in Kayla's body.
"Kiss," Andrew said, slurring the word a little. He met Madison in the center of the circle, and their lips locked for an awkwardly long time.
"Okay, I think we're done with this game," Kayla said from Will's body, sounding a bit less coherent than Andrew. "Let's all swap back now, and watch a movie or something."
After Kayla returned us to the bodies we arrived in, she turned the basement lights low, booted up the TV in there, and found us a rom-com on Netflix. We sat watching on a wide sofa - Kayla on my right, Madison and Andrew sloppily making out on my left, and all of us occasionally taking swigs of beer. Every so often, someone would get up to use the bathroom, but no one bothered pausing the movie. Once, my phone started to ring. Annoyed, and worried about annoying the others, I turned it off without checking who the call was from. Couldn't a girl-in-a-boy's-body enjoy her Friday night in peace?
"You know, I think I brought the booze out a little too early," Kayla said after the movie was finished. "I still don't feel like doing anything. You guys wanna just watch something else?" Nobody objected.
---
"Hey Kayla, what time is it?" I asked after the second half-hour episode of the show Kayla picked for us.
"You remember what time it was before the show started?" Kayla replied.
"No," I said.
"Well, just add two half-hours to that," she said. I gave her a look.
"It's 10:08," Madison said, her phone out.
"I should go home now," I said. "Probably have to save Will from my parents."
"You okay to drive?" Madison asked.
"I'll be fine," I said, getting up. "Bye, everyone!"
"Bye!" the others all said.
As I ascended the stairs out of Kayla's basement, I fought through the brain fog to mentally rehearse my cover story for my parents. I'm Kirsten's friend Will. I'm here for a sleepover. I drove here in a car that was definitely not Kirsten's car, because I'm not Kirsten - but I'm not going to say that part, of course... Oh, and I should also make sure not to enter through the garage, because if I'm Will, I can't open the garage door. Anything else...?
I had reached the entrance hall by now. I looked around for my jacket for a few seconds, then remembered I was looking for Will's jacket, not mine. Because I was Will. For now, I thought, shaking my head, I should just focus on getting home.
